I hope you’ve had a lovely week. What a gorgeous day on Sunday! Harry and I went to Warrandyte for a morning coffee and ended up staying til 3pm enjoying the sunshine, walking along the river and listening to the live music (a great guitarist playing all our favourite songs) at Thyme on the Terrace. It was heavenly. Harry actually lived in Warrandyte when we first met 38 years ago so it was a very nostalgic day.
As you probably know I’m a workaholic but lately I’ve been doing my best to not do anything work-related on a Sunday. I’ve also discovered a cure for Mondayitis which is to go swimming on Monday mornings. I do some laps in the pool and then soak in the spa for a bit. In the past I haven’t been very good with regular exercise but I decided earlier this year that it was time to add it into my weekly routine. I now swim 12 laps, do Yoga every Wednesday morning with the amazing Maleea and I do a Pilates class on Fridays. I’m definitely feeling the benefits.
Although I have lots of room to improve I’m a big believer in taking responsibility for looking after you own health. Of course there are things beyond our control but I know that doing some regular commonsense things to maintain your health can make ageing a much easier and more comfortable experience. I actually think that most of the aches and pains and ill health that typically occur as we age are the result of the accumulation of our lifestyle choices during the previous years. If you’ve been neglecting your health for 10 or 20 years you will pay the price.
Just as we prepare financially for retirement its just as important to prepare physically for old age. Establishing (or maintaining) habits like eating your 2 fruits and 5 vegies a day, getting 7 to 8 hours sleep, avoiding toxins, drinking enough water and getting some regular exercise are simple and natural ways to give yourself the best chance of staying healthy as you grow older.
If you’ve already accumulated some health problems then NOW is always a good time to look at how you can reverse them. Don’t just put it down to getting older! I have a joint in my left big toe that gets sore from time to time. Whenever that happens I double up on my vitamins for a few days and it settles down. If I accepted it as old age I’d probably take pain killers and the problem would spread to other joints in my body.
As much as you might not want to admit it, most health issues are caused by too much stress, chronic nutrient deficiencies and less than optimum lifestyle choices over a prolonged period of time. When these factors are causing a dis-ease then all the drugs, surgery and conventional medicine in the world can’t fix it.
